This Weeks Theme: In The Woods

EXAMPLE:

I’m not proud of how this started. Or how it ended. Or really anything in between, but here we are.

My name is Marcus. I went backpacking. Everything was normal at first. But on day three, shit got real.

I woke up cold. Not freezing, not hypothermic, just that uncomfortable edge where your body is aware something isn’t right but hasn’t filed the paperwork yet. I rolled over, expecting to see the same half-dead coals from the night before.

Instead, my fire was rebuilt and stoked, with a note that said “You’re not alone.”

Now, I’m not an idiot. I’ve seen enough internet, enough documentaries, enough late-night rabbit holes to know when something looks like a problem.

But I also know the woods.

So I ignored it because I’m smart and already know it’s probably a local black bear playing a prank on me.

People underestimate black bears. They’re curious. They’re clever. Give one enough time around campsites and suddenly you’ve got a bear out there leaving notes like it’s trying to workshop stand-up material.

Still, I burned the note and peed on the fire to make sure it is out all the way.

The steam burned my nostrils in a good way. The kind of burn that settles into your bones, instant relaxation. Like menthol, but personal. Like clarity. Like I was reclaiming something ancient and primal from the universe.

I packed up my things and got moving. I started my hike while brewing my coffee at the same time.

Don’t ask how. It’s one of those things you figure out when you spend enough time alone. Systems develop. Rituals emerge. Coffee happens.

The trail was normal. Too normal. The kind of normal that feels rehearsed. Like the forest was putting on a performance of itself.

Then, I looked up into a tree. And that’s when I saw it.

An old tickle me Elmo doll, hanging by its crotch.

It wasn’t swaying at first. Just… there. Suspended. Watching in that way only things without eyes can manage.

I threw a pinecone at it and somehow it starts moving and talking.

“How can this be?” I actually said it out loud, like a guy in a movie who knows he’s about to make things worse but commits anyway.

The plush was weathered from decades of abuse, and was mangy like someone used to use it like a plushy stripper.

It laughed. Not the clean, battery-powered giggle it was designed for. Something stretched. Something tired. Something that had been laughing for far too long without a reason.

Everything felt still, like the forest was holding it’s breath.

Then it exhaled.

The wind was warm and smelled kind of like morning breath. Not fresh morning breath either. The kind that suggests something woke up hungry.

I didn’t stick around to workshop that situation.

I continued down the trail, but at this point I couldn’t help but feel like I was being watched.

And possibly being photographed to be used in some sicko’s spank bank.

You try not to think about it, but once the thought is there, it sticks. Every branch snap, every leaf shift, every subtle movement in your peripheral vision starts to feel… intentional. Curated.

I slowed down and reflected on how much I hate being objectified by the patriarchy.

It wasn’t the time for it, but it was the time for it. The woods do that. They pull things out of you. They make you confront yourself, your place, your image, your narrative. I didn’t ask for that. I asked for a hike.

And then, through the trees. I saw it.

A figure stood there, a gimp with a bell and a machete.

It wasn’t hidden. It wasn’t stalking in the traditional sense. It just… existed. Standing there like it had always been there and I had finally earned the privilege of noticing.

It began to charge while letting out a noise that can only be compared to that of Tuscan Raider that is high on crack and got kicked in the balls, combined with the sex noises of a Kodiak grizzly.

That sound didn’t travel through the air. It went straight into my spine and set up shop.

I ran.

I ran like every survival instinct I had finally agreed on something for once in my life.

I tripped over roots and crashed through the brush. Never slowing down.

It took me three days to hike in to this campsite but I was back at my truck after 20 minutes of sprinting.

Time collapsed. Distance lied. The trail no longer mattered. My lungs were fire, my legs were gone, and still I moved.

I struggled to catch my breath as I looked into the woods one last time.

He was there.

I saw the figure standing in the tree line. A tall man with antlers, with the gimp on a leash.

The forest took one more deep breath,

Then exhaled more morning breath into my face.

It felt personal.

Like a warning

I didn’t argue.

I loaded my gear into my truck and I left.

Shedding the excessive weight as I took my pack off.

It was close to 30 minutes before I took a breath.

And I never went back for my gear.

Not the pack. Not the stove. Not the coffee setup that I was, frankly, very proud of.

I filed a police report and was told I was the third person in two weeks to call about this.

That didn’t feel like comfort. That felt like confirmation.

Then they informed me I was actually on private property and the owners tend to chase people out of there.

Owners.

That word did a lot of heavy lifting.

I was charged with trespassing.

And the judge, didn’t believe my story.

He looked at me the way people look at me. Like I had gone into the woods, found nothing, and came back with something I made up to justify it.

I was fined $800 for the trespassing and that sicko, is still out there chasing unsuspecting hunters out of its woods. And probably touching itself to pictures it took of them.

And somewhere out there, hanging from a tree by its crotch, something is still laughing.

AI Horror Template Madlibs: How to Play

Goal

Create a horror story that:

• uses every cliché imaginable

• follows a rigid structure

• becomes either accidentally funny or disturbingly effective

Step 1: Pick Your Victim (Protagonist)

Choose:

• A painfully normal name (Marcus, Sarah, Danial… AI loves them)
  OR

• Your buddy (Chris, Mike, Emily)

Then define:

• why they’re in the situation they are in (weekly theme)

• why they shouldn’t be there

Example:

“I went camping.”
“I answered a weird ad.”
“I needed to clear my head.”

Step 2: Establish False Normal

Write 2–3 paragraphs of:

• calm setup

• grounded detail

• mild unease

Mandatory ingredients:

• temperature description

• a small inconvenience

• something that feels “off” but ignorable

Step 3: Introduce the First Weird Object

Add ONE of the following:

• a note

• a strange item

• something placed deliberately

It must imply:

“you are not alone”

Examples:

• note in campfire

• object hanging in a tree

• something moved overnight

Step 4: Rationalize It Poorly

Your character must:

• come up with a bad but confident explanation

Examples:

• “probably a bear”

• “just the wind”

• “someone messing with me”

The worse the logic, the better.

Step 5: Insert Physical Sensation

Add a moment that describes:

• smell

• heat

• breath

• body reaction

Bonus points if it’s weirdly specific or uncomfortable.

Step 6: Drop a Mandatory Cliché

You MUST include at least one:

• “the forest went quiet”

• “something wasn’t right”

• “I felt like I was being watched”

• “the darkness felt alive”

Optional advanced move:
👉 exaggerate or twist it into something gross or absurd

Step 7: Escalate with a Visual

Introduce something clearly wrong:

• figure in the distance

• object behaving incorrectly

• something watching

Do NOT explain it.

Step 8: Add Internal Commentary

Your protagonist must:

• reflect on something random or out of place

• completely irrelevant thought

Write a first-person horror story using the following beats EXACTLY as written. Do not change wording. Only add detail, exaggeration, and absurdity around them. Lean into clichés and push them too far.

“The Autobiography”

The GhostWrite staff sat around the conference table.

There was a capybara in one of the chairs.

No one addressed it.

Rory stood at the front, coffee in hand.

“New project.”

The team straightened slightly.

Rory gestured toward the capybara.

“This is Gerald. He wants us to ghostwrite his autobiography.”

Rory took a drag from his smoke and continued.

“A Million Little Furs.”

The staff was warm and ghostly.

“Hi, Gerald,” Inkwell said.

“Welcome,” Glyph added, adjusting his glasses.

BooRadley gave a small nod.

The Saurus leaned forward, studying him.

“Capybaras first emerged during the Miocene epoch,” he said. “Roughly twenty-three million years ago. I remember the humidity.”

Gerald blinked.

Rory took a slow sip of coffee.

“Trust me,” he said. “This guy’s deep.”

Act One — “Voice Development”

Glyph stood at the whiteboard.

The Saurus stood beside him, arms folded like this was a lecture no one asked for.

“We’re going to structure the dialogue to give your experiences a more personal tone,” Glyph said.

He flipped to a clean page.

“Gerald, give me an example of your voice.”

Gerald blinked.

Glyph immediately started writing.

“Got it.”

He stepped aside.

On the board:

Quiet observer type

Inkwell tilted his head.

“…That was fast.”

The Saurus stepped forward.

“Let’s test responsiveness.”

He cleared his throat and shifted tone, like he was slipping into character.

“Gerald,” he said, “I’m Brian. The character from your household.”

He paused, pleased with himself. Then he read a line.

“The evolutionary survival trait most useful to the capybara appears to be indifference.”

He leaned in slightly.

“And how do you respond?”

Gerald blinked.

A long moment.

The Saurus nodded slowly.

“…Okay.”

He turned and scribbled on the board beneath Glyph’s note.

Says a lot with very little

Glyph stepped back, studying both notes.

“…We’re going to have to do most of the work.”

Rory, commented from the back of the room.

“Yeah.”

Another sip of coffee.

“But we’re keeping whatever he’s got.”

Gerald blinked again.

No one questioned it.

Act Two — “Finding the Story”

Inkwell was halfway buried in the manuscript, papers scattered everywhere like he’d decided organization was a personal attack.

He flipped through another section.

Paused.

“Oh—here’s one!”

Of course it was him.

He held the page up, already sold.

“Tell me more about the time your family launched a satellite into orbit around you so they could watch your dreams like a TV series?”

Gerald blinked.

Inkwell stamped the page with unnecessary enthusiasm.

“This one’s a keeper!”

Across the table, BooRadley quietly gathered a stack of papers.

He tapped them against the table once. Twice. Perfectly aligned.

“Let’s figure out what this is actually about.”

He started scanning.

Fast.

Precise.

Pages flipped in a controlled rhythm, like he wasn’t reading words so much as extracting something underneath them.

“…Okay.”

He slowed.

“There’s a through-line here.”

Inkwell leaned in.

“What, the satellite?”

BooRadley shook his head.

“No.”

He flipped one more page.

“…An evolutionary biologist tries to understand you.”

Another page.

“…Goes a little insane doing it.”

He glanced up at Gerald.

“…While you already have him figured out.”

Gerald blinked.

BooRadley’s expression shifted.

“…That’s good.”

Gerald blinked.

BooRadley nodded, a little too pleased now.

“Yeah. That’s very good.”

He grabbed a pen and wrote quickly.

Clean. Direct.

He slid the paper into the center of the table.

Inkwell leaned over to read it.

BooRadley didn’t say anything.

Gerald blinked again.

BooRadley watched him, then gave a small, satisfied nod.

“…Perfect.”

He underlined the sentence once.

Carefully.

Act Three — “Assembly”

The room shifted.

No more debate.

Just work.

Papers spread across the table like a crime scene that somehow made sense.

Then—

Movement.

A rapid montage occurred.

Glyph’s magnifying glass flickering over lines, circling words, drawing arrows that somehow clarified everything and nothing at once.

Inkwell at the keyboard, typing so fast his little ghost flippers blurred into a constant click-clack rhythm.

The Saurus looming over the document, claws tapping, deleting entire paragraphs without hesitation.

Delete.
Delete-delete.
Scroll.
Delete.

BooRadley moving slower than the rest.

Cutting.

Shifting.

Letting things breathe.

He didn’t remove everything.

Just what didn’t belong.

Sticky notes appeared.

Then disappeared.

Entire pages were restructured, rewritten, reduced, rebuilt.

A line got shorter.

Another got sharper.

Something vague became clear.

Something clear got cut.

Glyph paused.

“…Structure’s holding.”

Inkwell didn’t look up.

“…It’s starting to sound like a person.”

The Saurus squinted at the screen.

“…Barely.”

BooRadley read one section again.

Quiet.

Measured.

“…It’s close.”

The room slowed.

everyone.

Just… dialed in.

All eyes on the same page now.

The same idea.

BooRadley stepped back.

The Saurus crossed his arms.

Inkwell adjusted his glasses.

Glyph hovered just behind them.

Rory stood in the doorway, coffee in hand, like he’d been there the whole time.

On the screen—

The thesis.

Clean.

Coherent.

Finally said out loud:

“While others tried to understand him, Gerald never felt the need to explain himself.”

Silence.

Inkwell tilted his head.

“…That’s actually really good.”

Glyph nodded slowly.

“…It holds.”

The Saurus gave a small, reluctant shrug.

“…Efficient.”

BooRadley didn’t say anything.

He just watched Gerald.

Gerald blinked.

Rory took a sip of coffee.

“…Yeah.”

A pause.

“…This capybara’s deep.”

Final Act — “Delivery”

The manuscript sat on the table.

Clean. Bound. Finished.

For once, nothing looked like it needed fixing.

Glyph held a copy like it might disappear if he blinked too long.

“…We did it.”

Inkwell adjusted his glasses, scanning the cover one last time.

“Structurally sound.”

The Saurus gave a small nod.

“…Concise.”

BooRadley placed another copy in front of Gerald.

“We’ve already sent one to the publisher.”

Gerald blinked.

No reaction.

Just… acceptance.

He looked at the book.

Then back at them.

Then slowly turned and waddled toward the door.

No goodbye.

No acknowledgment.

Just… gone.

The room stayed quiet for a second after he left.

Then—

Inkwell leaned back.

“…He’s a great listener.”

The Saurus crossed his arms.

“…Very calming presence.”

Glyph stared off slightly.

“…I feel, emotionally lighter.”

BooRadley nodded once.

“And he somehow gets a book deal?”

Sharon stood calmly beside Gerald, gently petting his head.

“He’s lived an interesting life.”

Brian stared at her.

Then at Gerald.

Gerald blinked.

Brian exhaled, defeated.

“…Yeah. Apparently.”

You’ve got a jar of sauce.

It’s not bad.
It’s not the best.
It’s… there.

And now you’re staring at it like it’s going to suddenly develop personality on its own.

It won’t.

And yes.

Even professional chefs use store bought foods at home.

The Problem

Most home cooking problems aren’t about ingredients.

They’re about control.

Specifically:

control of water

Too much water?
Flavor disappears.

Too little?
Things burn.

Everything you do in a pan is a balance between those two states.

The Fix: Reduction (In Plain English)

Reduction just means:

boiling water out so everything else gets stronger

That’s it.

No chef jargon required.

Step One: Take Control of the Sauce

Dump your jar of sauce into a pan.

Now here’s the part people skip:

Add a splash of water to the jar.

Yes. Water.

You’re not ruining it. You’re resetting it.

That splash:

• loosens the sauce

• evens out the texture

• gives you control over how it cooks

Now shake it around to loosen everything stuck to the jar.

Bring it to a simmer.

Let it cook down.

What happens?

The water leaves.
The flavor stays.
Now it’s stronger than when it started.

Step Two: Use Liquid to Prevent Burning (Not Just Fix It)

When things start sticking, most people panic.

You shouldn’t.

That sticking is flavor trying to happen.

Add a small splash of liquid:

• water

• stock

• even a bit of your sauce

It will:

• stop burning

• loosen what’s stuck

• redistribute flavor across the pan

This is the early version of deglazing.

Step Three: Steam Is Your Secret Weapon

Here’s a trick that feels like cheating:

You’ve got burgers in a pan.
Cheese refuses to melt.
You’re getting annoyed.

Add a splash of water.

Put a lid on the pan.

Wait 20–30 seconds.

That trapped steam will:

• melt even stubborn cheese

• heat evenly without overcooking

• make you look like you know what you’re doing

You didn’t change the food.

You changed the cooking environment.

The Real Lesson

Cooking isn’t about:

• following recipes

• buying better ingredients

• memorizing jargon

• perfecting every technique

It’s about understanding what’s happening in the pan.

And most of the time, what’s happening is this:

Water is either helping you or fighting you

Learn to control it, and suddenly:

• weak sauce becomes strong

• stuck food becomes flavor

• stubborn cheese melts on command

Final Thought

You don’t need to “level up” your cooking.

You need to stop letting your food do whatever it wants.

Take control of the liquid, and everything else starts to fall into place.

Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud:

The more you cook a steak, the more moisture it loses.

Don’t boil it.

Let it:

gently simmer and baste

Spoon the liquid over the steak.

Give it a minute or two.

That’s it.

Final Rule

If a steak has lost its moisture:

You don’t fix it with technique.
You fix it with environment.

Add controlled liquid.
Control the heat.
Let it recover just enough to be enjoyable again.

Even a well-done steak can be saved.

It just needs a little help.

An endless expanse of white and dark timber stretched beneath the sky. Mountains cut through the horizon, and wind moved across the surface in long, invisible currents. There were no roads, no structures, no sound but the wind. A small plane sliced through the sky.

Inside, the plane was minimal and functional. Sheena sat by the window, still and focused. Not anxious. Not excited. Just watching. Outside, there was nothing but distance.

The plane banked slightly. Through the glass, a break in the trees revealed a small settlement below, sparse and ordered, too small for the amount of land around it. She took it in without reacting.

The plane landed on a narrow strip carved into the snow. The engines wound down, and silence rushed back in. The door opened, and cold air hit immediately.

She stepped down, her boots crunching into packed snow. She carried one pack, as the pilot unloaded her tote of luggage.

A man stood nearby, waiting with his hands in his pockets.

“You the teacher?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she said.

He nodded once. That was enough. No handshake.

“Well, welcome to Northvale.”

He turned and started walking, wheeling her luggage behind him. She followed.

The town was made up of a handful of buildings, spread out with practical spacing. Smoke rose from a few chimneys, straight up, with no wind at ground level. People moved with purpose. A woman carried wood. A man repaired something without looking up. No one stopped what they were doing.

A couple glanced at her, smiled, and waved. She noticed and waved back.

They passed two men mid-conversation. The conversation stopped as she approached. Both men smiled politely as she passed. The conversation did not resume.

A small cabin sat on the edge of town, separate but not far. The man gestured to it.

“You’re here,” he said.

She nodded.

He lingered for a second, like he might say something else.

“Hope you like the cold.”

“Mountaineering is my hobby,” she said.

“Just south of here you have the White Mountains. It’s beautiful up there. Just pack to stay warm.”

He let go of her luggage, turned, and walked away.

She watched him go, then turned to the cabin. She stepped up to the door and went inside.

The interior was simple, clean, bare essentials. A table, a bed, and a wood stove. Nothing extra. A small kitchenette sat at the far wall.

She stepped in and set her pack down. She moved through the space, checking it without touching much, assessing.

She found an envelope on the table with her name on it. She opened it.

Inside was a printed contract.

“Let’s say you could go anywhere.”

No reaction.

“Anywhere outside the town.”

A long pause.

“Why?” a boy asked.

Not curious. Literal.

She searched for an answer.

“To see something different.”

The boy considered that.

“We don’t need to.”

A few nods.

That was the consensus.

She moved between the desks again, slower this time, watching them.

They were watching her back now. Not openly. But consistently. Tracking.

“What do you want to learn?” she asked.

A pause.

“I want to take care of animals,” a girl said.

“So why don’t you?” she asked.

“We don’t learn that here.”

There it was. Clean. Learned.

She stopped walking and looked at the room. Really looked.

Thirteen kids.

No curiosity. No deviation. No future outside this place.

Just function.

The moment stretched longer than it should.

They didn’t break it. They waited for her to continue. For her to teach.

Something shifted in her.

Not panic. Not fear.

Clarity.

She turned back to the board and stared at what she had written. Math. Reading. Pieces of a life that didn’t exist here.

She set the chalk down slowly and turned back to them.

They were still watching. Waiting.

She understood now. Not abstractly. Not emotionally. Practically.

She wasn’t teaching them anything new.

She was helping maintain the system.

Reinforcing it.

She nodded once to herself.

Decision made.

“Alright.”

She picked the chalk back up and continued the lesson like nothing had changed.

But everything had.

That night, the cabin was quiet. The stove burned low.

She moved with purpose now, not restless, focused.

She pulled open a drawer. Inside were old papers and a few utensils. Nothing useful.

She checked another.

Then she found a small, worn notebook.

She paused and picked it up. Dust covered the surface. No name on the front.

She opened it.

Handwriting. Tight. Controlled.

She flipped through pages of notes, repetitive.

“Stick to curriculum.”

“Do not interfere.”

“They don’t want deviation.”

She flipped faster, more frantic now.

“They’re not teaching them to leave.”

“They’re preparing them to stay.”

A page pressed harder into the paper.

“Resources. That’s all they see.”

She stopped.

Another page. Different ink. Darker. The pen had dug into the paper.

“Quarterly Activity.”

She read.

“First year: simple counts. Beans. Nails. Cans. Showed them how to total what we have against what we’ll need.”

Below it:

“Second year: bodies instead of cans.”

More lines, the handwriting starting to tilt.

“Explained ‘capacity.’ Tried to keep it abstract.”

“They already knew who slows the line. Who eats more than they carry.”

Her eyes moved down.

“They call it a privilege to be chosen to help. I told them it was a lesson in responsibility.”

“They smiled.”

A section underlined twice:

“Q4: take them to the markers at the tree line.”

“‘They should see what happens when the numbers don’t work,’ the Mayor said.”

One last note on the page, the letters cramped, pressed hard enough to ripple the paper:

“They want me to let the class decide this time.”

Her fingers tightened on the notebook.

She turned another page.

“I asked the wrong questions.”

“This quarter, they want answers from them.”

She closed the notebook.

Not shocked.

Confirmed.

She set it down and sat, still.

The next day, in the schoolhouse, she stood at the board mid-lesson, wrote, and turned.

Twelve students.

One desk empty.

She saw it immediately and didn’t react.

She continued.

“Open your books,” she said.

Pages turned.

Normal.

Too normal.

Her eyes drifted to the empty desk. The girl’s desk. The one who wanted to take care of animals.

No one looked at it. No one acknowledged it.

She looked back to the class.

They were watching her again. Waiting. Tracking.

“Are we doing another list this quarter?” a boy asked.

She froze for just a second.

“What list?” she asked.

The boy shrugged.

“Like last time. When we wrote down who slows the group.”

A couple of kids nodded.

Matter of fact.

Nothing more.

She held their faces for a moment.

“Open to page thirty two.”

She turned back to the board and continued the lesson like nothing was missing.

She sat in Principal Stark’s office.

“It’s not complicated,” he said.

She sat still.

“You were given a curriculum.”

“I followed it.”

“You added to it.”

“Questions outside scope.”

“They were basic questions.”

“They weren’t necessary.”

A pause.

“They didn’t know what a map was.”

“They don’t need to.”

He said it simply. No edge. Just fact.

“You’re here to teach what’s relevant.”

“Relevant to what?”

He frowned slightly, not defensive, just confused why that wasn’t clear.

“To their lives.”

“You’re overextending.”

Softer now.

“That happens sometimes.”

Like he’d seen this before.

“You’ll settle in.”

Silence.

“Right.”

“Stick to the material.”

That was it.

No threat. No warning.

Just correction.

She entered the schoolhouse a fraction slower than usual. Not dramatic. But off.

The room reacted the same way it always did. Stillness. Twelve sets of eyes. Watching. Waiting.

She set her things down, her hand lingering on the desk a second longer than it should.

Then she sat and opened the drawer.

Inside was a stack of papers.

One sat on top.

Stamped: REQUIRED.

She looked at it.

Didn’t touch it yet.

A breath.

Then she took it out and stood.

The room remained silent.

“We’re doing something different today,” she said.

No reaction. Not curiosity. Just attention.

She looked down at the paper, reading it once even though she already knew what it said.

“This is a… group activity.”

“You’ll be evaluating each other.”

The shift was immediate.

Not fear. Not confusion.

Engagement.

Students began to move, subtle at first, chairs adjusting, bodies turning.

Alive in a way they hadn’t been.

She saw it.

It landed.

“You’ll assign value based on contribution.”

She swallowed slightly and continued anyway.

“Work output. Efficiency. Resource use.”

The language felt wrong in her mouth.

But she didn’t stop.

The students were already grouping, small clusters forming naturally.

No instruction needed.

They had done this before.

“Do we start with highest or lowest?” a student asked.

“Highest,” another said immediately.

A few nods.

Agreement.

A girl pulled her desk closer to another.

Papers were already being divided.

Systematic. Ordered. Eager.

She stood at the front of the room, still holding the sheet, watching, listening.

“He slows the group down,” one student said.

“Only on longer tasks,” another replied.

“That still counts.”

A pause.

Then they wrote.

No hesitation.

Across the room—

“She works steady,” a girl said.

“Not fast,” a boy added.

“But consistent.”

They considered that.

Then marked something down.

No emotion. No cruelty.

Just assessment.

Her grip tightened slightly on the paper.

A quiet inhale.

No one looked at her anymore.

They didn’t need her.

The system was running.

On its own.

A boy raised his hand, then stopped, realized, and lowered it.

He didn’t need permission.

He just continued.

She watched that.

That was the moment.

The last piece.

“Everyone participates,” she said quietly.

It came out automatic. Learned.

A girl across the room looked up, not at her, but at another student who hadn’t started writing yet.

“You need to contribute,” she said.

Not harsh. Not aggressive. Just correct.

The student nodded and began.

She exhaled, barely.

Her eyes moved across the room.

Twelve children.

Functioning.

Aligned.

No deviation.

No resistance.

Exactly as designed.

She lowered the paper, just slightly.

Her hand trembled once, then stopped.

She stood at the front of the room.

Teacher.

Overseeing.

The thing she now understood.

And was part of.

Part 6

That night, the cabin was dark. Only the stove gave off a low, fading glow.

She sat at the table, still.

Not thinking anymore.

Decided.

She stood and moved with purpose. No wasted motion.

She opened her pack and laid items out carefully, methodically.

Extra layers. Headlamp. Ice axe. Crampons. Food, minimal. Water.

Everything had a place.

Everything had a reason.

She paused, looked at one item in her hand, hesitated, then put it back.

Too heavy.

She closed the pack, tightened it, checked the straps.

No second-guessing.

She moved to the table.

The contract sat there.

She looked at it.

Then flipped it over.

Face down.

Done with it.

She stepped outside into the night and closed the door quietly behind her.

She didn’t lock it.

She paused and listened.

Nothing.

Just wind through trees.

She started walking, not fast, not slow, deliberate.

At the tree line, she stopped and looked back at the town.

Dim lights. Still. Distant.

Then she turned away and entered the trees.

Her headlamp clicked on, a narrow beam cutting through the darkness.

She moved through the terrain with confidence, careful footing, controlled breathing.

This was her environment.

A faint sound—

She stopped and listened.

Nothing.

Or something too far to place.

She kept moving.

She adjusted her pack slightly.

The strap sat perfectly, like it had been set for her.

A small detail.

Easy to miss.

The terrain shifted as she approached the ridge, steeper, colder. The wind picked up slightly.

She slowed, calculating each step.

She planted her foot, checked it, moved.

Efficient. Trained.

Another faint sound.

Behind her.

Or above.

She stopped again and listened, longer this time.

Nothing visible.

But something felt different.

She turned her headlamp off.

Darkness swallowed everything.

She waited.

Breathing steady.

Then the headlamp clicked back on.

She kept moving.

Faster now.

Not panicked.

But aware.

She reached higher terrain where the ground opened up and the wind cut harder. She leaned into it and kept moving.

Her pace increased slightly. She was committing now. Distance mattered.

Behind her, far off, a faint mechanical sound drifted through the wind. Barely audible. It could have been the wind. It could have been something else.

She didn’t look back.

She just moved.

She climbed the slope, controlled and focused.

For a moment, it felt like she might make it.

She kept climbing, her breathing heavier now but still controlled, still moving.

A sound.

Low at first. Distant.

Then clearer.

A mechanical hum.

Unnatural against the wind.

She stopped and listened.

There it was again.

Not random.

Her eyes shifted, calculating distance and direction.

The sound grew. Not rushed. Steady.

Snowmobiles.

She didn’t panic. Didn’t run blindly.

She moved.

Faster now. More direct.

She crested the ridge line, wind hitting harder as visibility dropped.

The sound split. More than one.

Coming from different angles.

She stopped, just for a second.

That was all it took to understand.

She wasn’t being chased.

She was being closed in on.

She turned, changed direction, picked a line, and moved.

Her headlamp cut across open snow.

No cover. Just distance.

The first light appeared far off.

Then another.

Then another.

They didn’t rush her.

They adjusted.

Matching her movement.

The sound grew louder. Closer. Not chaotic. Controlled.

She pushed harder. Her footing less precise now, fatigue starting to show.

A misstep.

She stumbled, caught herself, and kept going.

Too late.

A snowmobile cut across her path, not fast, just enough to block.

Another behind her.

Then another.

Engines idled.

Surrounding.

She stopped.

Not because she wanted to.

Because there was nowhere to go.

Three men were already dismounted. No weapons drawn. They didn’t need them.

Her breathing was sharp now, controlled but breaking.

She looked for an opening.

There wasn’t one.

One of the men stepped forward. Not aggressive. Just moving.

He took her arm, firm.

She pulled once, reflex, not a fight.

He tightened his grip.

That was enough.

They didn’t speak at first.

They didn’t need to.

Another man moved behind her, unclipped her pack, and slid it off. Efficient. No struggle.

The first man released her arm only to take her jacket.

She resisted slightly, a small pull back.

He didn’t react.

He just took it.

Another removed her gloves, one at a time.

Quick. Practiced.

The cold hit immediately.

Sharp.

Immediate.

She stood there, breathing, exposed.

The man who took her jacket looked at her.

“You shouldn’t have run,” he said.

Nothing else followed.

They stepped back and returned to their machines.

No hesitation.

No lingering.

Engines started, one by one.

They didn’t look back.

They didn’t check on her.

They didn’t need to.

They left.

Lights faded into the distance.

Sound followed.

Then disappeared.

Silence returned.

Wind.

She stood alone in the open snow, her breath visible, her hands already starting to stiffen.

She looked around.

Nothing.

No one.

She exhaled, sharp and controlled.

Still alive.

For now.

She remained still at first.

Listening.

Wind.

Nothing else.

Her breathing slowed, forcing itself steady.

In.

Out.

Measured.

She looked down at her hands and flexed her fingers.

Limited response.

Time was already working against her.

She turned slightly, scanning.

Not for them.

For something else.

Then she moved.

She climbed again, bare hands against the snow, boots finding purchase.

Slower now.

More deliberate.

No wasted energy.

No panic.

Just movement.

She kept her head low, protecting what heat she could.

Her breath tight and controlled.

The wind shifted.

A slight break in the sound.

She stopped.

Listened.

Nothing.

Or something quieter.

Something intentional.

She adjusted her direction, subtle, like she already knew where she was going.

She crested another ridge.

A shape stood there.

Still.

Waiting.

Russ.

Standing in the dark, a down jacket in his hand, her real pack at his feet.

She stopped, just for a second.

Not surprised.

Not relieved.

Confirming.

He stepped forward and handed her the jacket.

“Put it on.”

She did. Immediately. No hesitation.

He handed her the pack, straps already adjusted exactly how she had them.

Or better.

She slipped it on, tightened once, checked.

Good.

He led her to a small clearing where a fire burned low.

She held her hands over it, letting the heat return.

“Thank you,” she said.

Not accusatory. Just fact.

“Yeah. As long as they think you’re dead,” he said.

“They don’t change it.”

“Change what?” she asked.

“How they do things.”

He looked back toward the direction of the town.

Not worried.

Certain.

She absorbed that.

“And you just—”

She stopped.

Didn’t finish it.

He didn’t help her.

“Keep my mouth shut and you don’t give them a reason to think you survived,” he said.

Wind cut across the ridge edge as she stood with her jacket on and her pack secured. Russ stood a few steps away. Neither of them moved.

“They do this to everyone?” she asked.

“If they need to,” he said.

“And it always works?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

No hesitation.

“They always do it this way. That’s the system.”

She looked back the way she came.

Nothing visible.

Just dark and distance.

“You don’t stop it,” she said.

Not accusing. Clarifying.

“No.”

“I don’t interfere.”

The same language as the contract. Intentional.

“But you helped me.”

“You actually have the skills that might get you out of here.”

He let that sit.

“I worked around it. That’s the difference.”

The wind pushed through again, colder now.

She looked between two directions.

Behind her, the town.

Ahead, the mountains.

Both quiet.

Both waiting.

“You go back—” he said.

“You keep your head down.”

“And that’s it?” she asked.

“That’s it.”

No hidden clause. No second layer.

“They’ll trust me?” she asked.

“If you don’t make them notice you.”

“You’ll eat. You’ll work. You’ll stay.”

He didn’t say anything else.

He didn’t need to.

Part 7

She turned and looked toward the mountains. Wind rolled over the ridgeline, unforgiving.

“Other way—” he said.

“You’re on your own.”

“I already am.”

That landed.

A long silence followed.

No push.

No persuasion.

Just space.

He watched her. Not trying to read her. Just waiting.

She adjusted her pack slightly, checked the strap.

Set.

She nodded once.

Not to him.

To herself.

“I’m not going back.”

Simple.

Final.

He didn’t react.

Because he already knew.

“Then don’t stop.”

“Once you start, you don’t stop.”

That was the only instruction he gave.

She turned and faced the mountains fully.

No hesitation.

She stepped forward.

Her headlamp clicked on, a narrow beam cutting ahead as she moved into the dark.

Behind her, Russ remained where he was, still, part of the system. Not following. Not calling out.

She kept moving.

She didn’t look back.

The distance grew between her and everything she was leaving behind.

She continued the ascent without pause.

She didn’t glance back. She didn’t check the sky. Her focus remained forward, on the immediate terrain.

She refused to look for a peak.

She just moved.

Step.

Plant.

Shift.

Step.

No final push. No visible goal.

Only more white.

The terrain shifted beneath her, less consistent now. Wind-packed crust that might hold. Softer pockets that might not.

Her foot placement became more deliberate.

Test.

Wait a fraction too long.

Commit.

Occasional shallow give under her weight sent a quick drop through her stomach before she corrected.

The wind built as she climbed, not in gusts but as a steady pressure, like hands pushing against her.

A slight lateral shove forced constant balance adjustment.

Her ice axe bit into the surface before she slipped.

Metal into ice.

The sound swallowed instantly.

Her breathing grew heavier now, controlled but edged with something she wouldn’t admit.

Her shoulders tightened under the pack, straps cutting in.

Her steps shortened.

Efficiency over speed.

Survival over distance.

She didn’t stop.

She knew what happened if she stopped.

Her fingers slowed, glove fabric stiffening as sensation dulled.

Her grip adjusted again and again, searching for strength that wasn’t fully there.

She didn’t pause to recover.

She kept moving while pieces of her stopped responding.

The ridge repeated itself.

Every rise looked like the last.

Ridge led to slope.

Slope led to a pale horizon.

The horizon never got closer.

Distance remained undefined.

Only the knowledge of how far she needed to be from them.

She maintained her direction.

No hesitation.

No deviation.

Trusting that away was enough.

Her rhythm held.

Step.

Plant.

Shift.

Step.

No break.

No change.

No permission to rest.

She kept going.

Part 8

After the glissade, she kept moving.

No pause to celebrate not dying.

Each step controlled. Each placement deliberate.

Every misstep a possible last one.

The terrain shifted unpredictably beneath her.

Hard plates rang underfoot.

Soft collapses swallowed her ankles.

She adjusted constantly, hips, knees, spine all negotiating with gravity.

Her breathing was now fully audible, thin, scraping pulls of air.

Managed.

But close.

Her shoulders clamped around the pack as if letting it slip even an inch meant freezing where she fell.

A delay crept between steps.

A micro hesitation.

Then she forced the next one anyway.

No stopping.

Stopping was waiting.

Waiting was being found.

Uneven ground forced a wider stance.

Her legs braced against a shove that might come.

Minor stumbles caught her toes.

Her ankles twisted and recovered before pain could register.

She used the ice axe intermittently.

Stab.

Drag.

Anchor against what she couldn’t see.

Her fingers remained stiff, commands delayed, then ignored.

Her grip faltered once, the axe threatening to slip.

She clamped down hard enough to hurt.

She didn’t try to warm them.

Time was warmer than skin.

She spent it moving.

The ground continued without markers.

No tracks.

No familiar trees.

No visible sense of progress.

Only the knowledge that the town was somewhere behind her.

Direction held by intent alone.

A compass of fear.

A bearing set to anywhere else.

Her pace slowed, not by choice but by failing muscles.

Each step required effort now.

A decision instead of a reflex.

Movement became mechanical.

Step.

Plant.

Shift.

Step.

A body moving because it refused to stop.

Snow coverage thinned.

Dirty edges appeared.

Patches of ground showed through.

More exposed earth and ice.

Footing demanded more attention.

Each step could roll, slip, or hold.

Energy output spiked as she dragged the last of her reserves forward.

She stepped off the snow onto packed ground.

The footing changed.

Less give.

Less threat of disappearance.

She didn’t react.

No relief.

No visible claim of safety.

She kept moving.

As if the mountain hadn’t ended yet.

Exterior lights appeared ahead.

Warm.

Unnatural after the white.

Inside, people moved slowly, easily.

No urgency.

She paused at the diner door.

Not hesitation.

A body bracing for a different kind of cold.

The door opened and a bell chimed.

She stepped inside.

Warm light.

Steady.

Unthreatening.

Voices.

Utensils.

Movement without urgency.

A few heads turned, assessed her in a glance, then looked away.

She was no one.

She moved to a booth, set her pack down carefully, and sat.

Back to the wall.

View of the door.

Automatic.

She picked up the menu and flipped it open.

Pages full.

Options.

Variety.

Food without justification.

Her eyes moved across it.

Not hungry.

Calculating.

A server passed behind her carrying a bus tub filled with half-eaten plates.

Meat left untouched.

Bread torn and abandoned.

A bowl still half full.

The server dumped it into a bin.

Food hit plastic.

Soft.

Wet.

Final.

Her eyes flicked to it for just a second.

No visible reaction.

But something tightened.

She looked back to the menu.

Tried to continue reading.

Didn’t.

She set it down.

A waitress approached.

“Anything to drink, Hun?” she asked.

She looked up.

Faces that weren’t measuring her.

A different kind of unfamiliar.

“Water,” she said.

The waitress nodded, wrote it down, and moved on.

No questions.

No expectations.

No system to satisfy.

She sat in the booth, her hands still slightly curled like she was holding something that wasn’t there anymore.

Around her, laughter.

Conversation.

Food no one had to earn.

She didn’t join it.

Didn’t reject it.

She just existed inside it.

The Two Core Ideas

At its simplest, Synchronic Self Theory rests on two ideas.

1. The universe reflects what you project into it.

Not in a vague, motivational way.

In a practical one.

The way you think, what you focus on, how you interpret events, it shapes what you notice, what you pursue, and what you reinforce. Over time, that becomes your reality.

Not because the universe is changing.

Because your interaction with it is.

2. You don’t become one version of yourself. You align many.

There isn’t just one “you” waiting to be discovered.

There are multiple versions, patterns, instincts, skills, contradictions.

The process is not choosing one.

It’s synchronizing them.

When those versions stop competing and start working together, that’s when something stable starts to form.

That’s what I define as your true self.

Why This Newsletter Looks the Way It Does

This structure isn’t random.

Each day reflects a different part of that system:

• Writing → expression

• Editing → refinement

• Satire → distortion and clarity through humor

How to Edit Dialogue (Without Killing It)

Authors Note: Some of this material is redundant to my Monday column on writing dialogue. This intended to be the editorial side. The simple reality though, editing well is redundant.

Most bad dialogue isn’t written badly.

It’s edited badly.

People take something that sounds human and “refine” it until it sounds like:

a script written by someone who has never heard a conversation in their life

Editing dialogue isn’t about making it cleaner.

It’s about making sure:

it still sounds like a person said it

1. Don’t edit dialogue the same way you edit prose

Prose wants:

• clarity

• efficiency

• structure

Dialogue wants:

• rhythm

• voice

• intention

If you apply prose rules to dialogue, you flatten it.

2. Keep what sounds redundant (if it sounds human)

People repeat themselves.

They:

• rephrase

• circle back

• say the same thing slightly differently

Cutting all of that creates this:

“I’m upset.”
“Why?”
“You lied.”

Clean. Efficient. Dead.

Sometimes redundancy is:

context, not clutter

3. Cut the lines that explain the obvious

The opposite problem exists too.

“I’m upset because you lied to me earlier.”

If the scene already showed the lie:

Cut it.

Let the audience connect it.

4. Track what each character knows

This is where dialogue quietly breaks.

Characters start saying things like:

they already read the script

Before you edit a line, ask:

Would this character actually say this, with what they know right now?

5. Fix vague dialogue, don’t “tighten” it blindly

AI loves this:

“We need to talk about it.”
“You know what I mean.”
“This cannot keep happening.”

That’s not subtle. That’s empty.

If “it,” “this,” or “that” isn’t clearly grounded:

define it or cut it

6. Let tone carry meaning, not explanation

Instead of:

“I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.”

Try:

“No, it’s fine. Really.”

One is a statement.

The other is a situation.

7. Use dialogue tags like seasoning, not a full meal

“He said” / “she said” is fine.

What’s not fine:

“he exclaimed angrily”
“she responded sarcastically”

If the dialogue needs the adverb:

the line isn’t doing its job

Also:
You don’t need to tag every line.

Once it’s clear who’s speaking:

trust the rhythm

8. Read it out loud (non-negotiable)

You will catch:

Most dialogue fails for one simple reason:

It sounds like writing instead of speech.

People don’t talk in clean sentences. They don’t explain themselves clearly. They don’t take turns politely. And they definitely don’t sound like they’ve been edited.

If your dialogue feels flat, forced, or overly polished, it’s not because you’re a bad writer. It’s because you’re writing dialogue like it’s text on a page instead of something coming out of a person.

Let’s fix that.

1. People don’t say exactly what they mean

Subtext carries dialogue.

If a character says exactly what they feel or think, the scene loses tension. Real conversations are full of deflection, avoidance, and implication. You can emphasize underlying emotions in the narrative while keeping detachment between characters.

“I’m fine” rarely means “I’m fine.”

“I’m fine,” he said. Catching his breath.

“I’m fine!” She snapped, no longer holding back the frustration.

“I’m fine,” she replied. But he saw differently in her eyes.

Humans are expressive by nature. Let their words be felt. Dialogue carries narration; let the narrative carry the emotional weight of the dialogue.

2. Use greetings strategically

Most conversations don’t need a warm-up.

But that doesn’t mean greetings are useless. It means they need a purpose.

❌ Empty greetings (what to avoid)

“Hey.”
“Hey.”
“How are you?”
“I’m good.”

This is filler. It doesn’t reveal anything, shift anything, or create tone.

✔️ Functional greetings (what to use instead)

A good greeting should do at least one of these:

• Establish tone

• Reveal relationship

• Add movement to the scene

• Carry character voice

Examples:

“Hey, Rachel!” a voice called out from across the street.

This:

• Adds distance

• Creates motion

• Sets energy

“Mornin’,” he said, tipping his hat.

This:

• Establishes character

• Sets tone

• Suggests setting without explaining it

Silent greetings (often better)

You don’t always need a greeting at all.

If two characters are already together, the scene can imply it:

She slid into the booth across from him.
“You’re late.”

No greeting. No confusion. The relationship is already active.

Rule of thumb:

• If the greeting adds texture → keep it

• If it adds nothing → cut it

• If the scene already implies connection → skip it entirely

Final Thought:

Don’t remove greetings because a rule told you to.

Use them when they do something.

Cut them when they don’t.

3. Use contractions like a normal human

“I cannot do that”
“I will not go”

No one talks like this unless they’re:

• Performing

• Angry

• Or trying to sound formal on purpose

Use contractions unless there’s a reason not to. When a character avoids them, it should feel intentional, not default.

4. Interruptions create realism

People don’t wait their turn.

They cut each other off. They overlap.

Clean, uninterrupted dialogue reads like a staged performance. Let it get messy.

“Please just tell me what really happened?” she asked.

He shot a glare back at her. “No.”

“Look,” she started. “I just wan–.”

“No!” he pushed back. Posturing. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Humans don’t always know what they are trying to say before they start thinking. They redirect mid-thought. Use it to your advantage. Allow characters to speak without certainty.

“That’s the only logical explana–,” he paused.

“Unless, the explanation isn’t logical.”

Spoken quietly as he relaxed into his chair.

This is where rhythm creates tension. Not through perfect lines, but through interruption, hesitation, and imbalance.

5. Make Dialogue Enhance the Flow

Dialogue isn’t just for conflict.
It’s also how information moves through a scene.

The problem isn’t information.

The problem is redundancy.

The Real Rule

Dialogue and narration should support each other, not repeat each other.

Pick one to carry the weight.

❌ Redundant Writing (What to Avoid)

John slammed the door, furious.
“I’m so angry right now,” he said.

The narration already did the job.
The dialogue just repeats it.

✔️ Division of Labor (What to Do Instead)

Let one carry emotion, the other carry information.

Option A: Narration carries emotion, dialogue carries information

John slammed the door.
“They fired me.”

Now:

• Narration = emotion

• Dialogue = new information

Option B: Dialogue carries emotion, narration stays minimal

The door slammed.
“They fired me.”

Same information, but now the emotion lives in the delivery.

Where Dialogue Fails

When it tries to do both at once and repeats what we already know:

“I’m angry because they fired me.”

That’s not dialogue.
That’s a summary disguised as speech.

Where Dialogue Works

Good dialogue still carries tension:

• Disagreement

• Misunderstanding

• Avoidance

• Hidden intent

But it also moves the story forward.

If nothing new is revealed, the scene stalls.

• If narration already said it → don’t repeat it in dialogue

• If dialogue says it → don’t explain it again in narration

• If both are doing the same job → cut one

6. Avoid “On-the-Nose” Lines

If a character says exactly what the scene is about, the scene dies.

“I’m upset because you betrayed me.”

That’s not dialogue.
That’s a summary.

It tells the reader exactly what to feel instead of letting the scene create that feeling.

What’s actually wrong with it

It removes:

• tension

• subtext

• interpretation

There’s nothing left for the reader to engage with. The moment becomes flat because it’s already been explained.

Let the emotion show through:

• how the character speaks

• what they avoid saying

• what they choose to focus on

Example:

❌ On-the-nose:

“I’m upset because you betrayed me.”

✔️ Subtext-driven:

“You didn’t even tell me.”

“I was going to.”

“When?”

Now the betrayal is clear without being stated directly.

Narration and dialogue work together

You don’t need dialogue to carry everything.

Let the narration handle what the character won’t say:

She kept her eyes on the floor.
“You didn’t even tell me.”

The narration carries the emotional weight.
The dialogue carries the conflict.

Rule of thumb

If a line sounds like it could be used to describe the scene, it probably doesn’t belong in the dialogue.

Where this matters most

On-the-nose lines show up when:

• you’re trying to make sure the reader “gets it”

• you don’t trust the scene to carry meaning

• you’re summarizing instead of dramatizing

Final thought

Good dialogue doesn’t explain the scene.

It lets the scene explain the dialogue.

7. Each character needs a different rhythm (and your tagging should support it)

Forget “voice” for a second.

Focus on rhythm.

Some characters:

• Speak in short bursts

• Ramble

• Dodge questions

• Over-explain

That rhythm is what separates them. The key is do not break character rhythms during dialogue. It is tempting to have both characters conform to the same rhythm. People are not generic, they are dynamic. Your character should also be.

Dialogue tags: keep them simple

Use:

• “he said”

• “she said”

They’re invisible. That’s their job.

When to stop tagging

Once the rhythm and flow are clear, stop tagging every line.

Readers don’t need:

• constant reminders

• or a play-by-play

Let the conversation breathe.

“What kind of pizza?” Barbara asked.

“Cheese!” Derrick yelled.

“Pepperoni!” Kim snapped back.

“Cheese!”

“Pepperoni!”

“Cheese!”

“Well, I guess this is motherhood.” Barbara muttered while she dialed the phone.

Rule of thumb

If the reader gets lost, add a tag.
If the tags are everywhere, remove them.

8. Let People Be Unclear

Humans are vague.

They:

• trail off

• change direction

• don’t finish thoughts

They don’t always know what they’re trying to say until they’re already saying it.

❌ Overly clear dialogue (what to avoid)

“I don’t trust you because of what happened yesterday.”

Technically correct. Completely dead.

No hesitation. No uncertainty. No humanity.

✔️ Natural ambiguity (what it should feel like)

“I just… after yesterday, I don’t know.”

Now:

• the thought isn’t complete

• the emotion leaks through

• the reader fills in the gap

Why this works

Real conversations are rarely clean.

People:

• talk around things

• avoid saying the actual problem

• lose their train of thought mid-sentence

That lack of clarity creates tension.

Important distinction

Unclear does not mean confusing.

The reader should understand:

• what the character feels

• what the conflict is

Even if the character can’t fully say it.

Use narration to anchor the meaning

Let the dialogue stay messy while the narrative keeps it grounded:

“I just… I don’t know.”

She looked away, like saying it out loud might make it real.

The dialogue is incomplete.
The meaning is not.

Rule of thumb

• Let characters speak imperfectly

• Let the reader understand clearly

Final thought

Perfect clarity sounds written. Imperfect speech sounds real.

The goal isn’t confusion. It’s controlled mess.

9. Silence Is Dialogue

What a character doesn’t say often carries more weight than what they do.

Silence isn’t empty.
It’s a response.

What silence actually does

Silence can:

• confirm something without stating it

• avoid something that matters

• create tension without adding words

• shift power in a conversation

A character choosing not to answer is still making a choice.

Overwritten version (what to avoid)

“Did you know?”

“Yes. I knew the whole time. I just didn’t want to tell you because I was afraid of how you would react.”

Everything is explained. Nothing is felt.

✔️ Silence doing the work

“Did you know?” Kimberly asked.

He didn’t answer.

“You did.”

No explanation. No speech.

The silence is the answer.

Types of silence

Not all silence means the same thing.

Avoidance

“Where were you last night?”

“That’s not the point.”

They answered… without answering.

Deflection

“Did you read it?”

“You’re still working on that?”

Redirect instead of respond.

Refusal

“Say something.”

He didn’t.

Nothing said. Everything implied.

Delayed response

“Are you coming back?”

A long pause.

The pause carries the weight before the word does.

10. Don’t Over-Explain Context

If the audience can infer something, let them.

You don’t need to explain everything your characters already understand.

“As you know, we’ve been partners for ten years, and ever since the incident last summer, things haven’t been the same.”

No one talks like this.

Characters don’t explain shared history to each other just so the audience can catch up.

✔️ Implied context (what to aim for)

“We’ve been doing this too long for you to pull that now.”

Same idea.

No exposition dump.
The history is implied.

What over-explaining does

It:

• flattens tension

• slows pacing

• makes characters sound artificial

• reminds the audience they’re being told a story

Trust the scene

Let:

• actions

• reactions

• tone

• word choice

carry the context.

The audience will connect the dots faster than you think.

Rule of thumb

If both characters already know it, they don’t need to say it.

If the audience can figure it out, don’t explain it.

Final thought

Dialogue isn’t there to brief the audience.

It’s there to reveal what’s happening between the characters.

Let the context sit underneath the conversation, not inside it.

11. Conflict Beats Agreement

Two people agreeing is not a scene.

Agreement ends movement.
Conflict creates it.

What conflict actually means

Conflict doesn’t always mean yelling.

It can be:

• subtle resistance

• avoidance

• mismatched priorities

• one person pushing while the other stalls

Even calm conversations have tension underneath them.

❌ Agreement (what to avoid)

“We should leave.”
“Yeah, that’s a good idea.”
“Okay.”

Nothing changes.
Nothing is revealed.
The scene stalls.

✔️ Friction (what to aim for)

“We should leave.”

“Now?”

“Yeah.”

“We just got here.”

Now:

• one pushes

• one resists

• the scene has direction

Types of conflict

You don’t need an argument to create tension.

Push vs Resist

“Call her.”

“I’m not doing that.”

Direct vs Avoidant

“Did you read it?”

“You always jump to that.”

Different goals

“We need to fix this.”

“No, we need to move on.”

Soft disagreement (often stronger)

“It’s fine.”

“You don’t sound like it is.”

Why this matters

Without tension:

• dialogue becomes filler

• scenes lose momentum

• characters feel interchangeable

With tension:

• every line has weight

• the scene moves forward

• character dynamics become clear

Rule of thumb

If both characters want the same thing in the same way, something is missing.

Even alignment should have friction:

• timing

• tone

• intention

Final thought

Conflict doesn’t have to explode.

It just has to exist.

Even a quiet scene should feel like something is being pushed… and something is pushing back.

12. Read It Out Loud

This is the fastest way to catch bad dialogue.

If it feels awkward to say, it’s awkward to read.

No exceptions.

Why this works

Dialogue is meant to be spoken.

When you read silently, your brain fills in gaps and smooths over problems.

When you say it out loud, those problems show up immediately.

❌ What looks fine on the page

“I am not entirely sure that this is the correct course of action for us at this moment.”

Technically fine.

Try saying it without sounding like you’re testifying in court.

✔️ What sounds natural

“I don’t know if this is a good idea.”

Cleaner. Faster. Human.

What to listen for

When reading out loud, pay attention to:

• unnatural phrasing

• sentences that are too long

• forced formality

• rhythm that feels off

• places where you stumble or pause

Your voice will catch what your eyes won’t.

Hidden benefit

This also reveals:

• whether characters sound distinct

• whether the pacing drags

• whether the dialogue flows or fights itself

Rule of thumb

If you trip over it, your reader will too.

If you wouldn’t say it, your character shouldn’t either.

Final thought

You don’t need a complex editing system to fix dialogue.

You just need to hear it.

Because the moment it sounds wrong… it is.

13 (BONUS). People don’t speak “correctly” — and neither should your characters
This isn’t about contractions (that’s point 3). This is about breaking rules on purpose: dropped words, sentence fragments, repetition, misused grammar. Real speech isn’t polished — it’s human. Let your characters sound like they’re thinking out loud, not delivering lines.

This is the one most writers quietly avoid.

People:

• drop words

• misuse grammar

• speak in fragments

• repeat themselves

• say things wrong

And yet dialogue often looks like this:

“I am not going to do that because it is not appropriate.”

That’s not a person. That’s a formal statement.

Real version:

“I’m not doing that. That’s… no. Just no.”

This isn’t about making characters sound unintelligent

It’s about making them sound specific.

Different people speak differently:

• “It isn’t” vs “It’s not” vs “It ain’t”

• “Going to” vs “gonna”

• Formal vs casual vs clipped

Every choice tells you something about:

• background

• personality

• emotional state

Final truth

Perfect grammar isn’t realistic dialogue.

It’s sanitized dialogue.

Closing

Good dialogue doesn’t try to impress.

It doesn’t explain itself.

It doesn’t clean itself up for the reader.

It sounds like something someone would actually say… even if they wouldn’t say it perfectly.

The main office was quieter than usual, which never meant anything good.

The team gathered around the table as Rory dropped the stack in front of them. It echoed.

“Incoming project,” he said. “Client’s a… philosopher.”

“Published?”

“No.”

BooRadley tilted his head slightly.

“Coherent?”

Rory lit another cigarette with a deep drag.

“So… he’s right twice?” Inkwell asked.

Glyph’s little ghost flippers moved quickly now, methodical, controlled.

“Let’s clean the scaffolding.”

A new version formed on the screen.

Clear. Organized. Structured.

Headings. Subheadings. Flow.

Inkwell drifted closer and read it.

“…I understand it now.”

He paused.

“…I also don’t care about it anymore.”

Glyph nodded, still staring at the screen.

“Well,” he said quietly, “I now have a lot to think about…”

Inkwell slowly turned.

“…Glyph’s been philosophically compromised.”

He cracked his little ghost knuckles.

“Okay. Okay. Let’s bring some life back.”

He slid into the chair and started rewriting.

Adding tone.

Adding humor.

Adding something human.

“Imagine your thoughts are like echoes—”

“Stop.”

Rory didn’t even look up.

Inkwell froze.

“…Too bloggy?”

“Too Medium article.”

Inkwell deflated slightly.

“…Fair.”

He scrolled.

Found another line.

“Let’s see… ‘The most real part of reality is that nothing is real.’”

He stared at it.

“…What does that even mean?”

Rory took a drag from a fresh cigarette as he crushed the last one into the ashtray.

“It means this guy’s got too much free time on his hands.”

He didn’t rush.
Didn’t react.
He just read.

Line by line, he absorbed it, like he was listening for something underneath the words instead of the words themselves.

A long moment passed.

Then—

“…He’s trying to say one thing.”

Everyone looked at him.

BooRadley scrolled.

“…But he doesn’t trust it.”

Silence.

That landed.

He started editing.

Whole sections changed.
A paragraph shifted.
Then another.

He didn’t rewrite everything. He carved it down, leaving space where things used to be.

Not empty.

Just… cleaner.

He finally dialed in and defined all the vague concepts.

Gave meaning to the disjointed sentences.

Inkwell leaned in.

“…It feels better.”

BooRadley gave a small nod.

“It’s closer.”

Across the room, Rory took a sip of his coffee, already losing patience.

“Well. How many pages are we down to?”

BooRadley scrolled through the document.

Paused.

“…We’re up to one thousand twenty-eight pages.”

Rory blinked.

BooRadley sighed.

“Turns out he was being incredibly vague about most of his concepts.”

The whole group exhaled at once.

Act Three — “The Source Material”

Rory flipped back to the first page.

He read out loud:

“The recursive observational feedback loop of conscious projection onto perceived reality creates a mirrored experiential framework—”

He stopped.

Stared at the page.

“…I want to meet this guy.”

The Saurus perked up.

“To help him?”

Rory took a slow drag.

“To take his pen away.”

The room settled.

Everyone had taken a pass at it.

The document was now longer.
Clearer.
Still bloated.

The Saurus stood.

“No one thought to start with me?”

No one answered.

Because they hadn’t.

He walked over, cracking his claws, and looked at the document in full. He scrolled once. Then again.

Stopped.

“…Alright.”

Delete.

Delete-delete.

Scroll.

Delete.

Scroll.

Delete.

The others watched, uneasy. Not surprised. Just familiar with the pattern.

Inkwell leaned forward.

“…Hey—”

“Hold on.”

Delete.

Glyph adjusted his glasses.

“You might want to preserve—”

Gone.

BooRadley didn’t say anything.

He already knew how this ended.

A few seconds passed.

That was all it took.

The Saurus leaned back.

“Done.”

The document now read:

Silence.

Inkwell blinked.

“…That’s it?”

The Saurus shrugged.

“That’s all it ever was.”

Glyph adjusted his glasses again.

“…He used eight hundred pages to avoid saying that.”

“He didn’t trust it.”

Rory stared at the sentence, then took a long drag.

“…Yeah.”

A moment passed.

“…That’s actually not a bad philosophy.”

Inkwell tilted his head.

“…So what do we send him?”

Rory exhaled slowly.

“Both versions.”

The Saurus looked at him.

“Why?”

Rory smirked.

“Because he’ll pick the long one.”

Then—

Everyone nodded in unison.

Rory turned back to his computer, already moving on.

Hours later, the email landed exactly where it was always going to land.

A dim apartment.

A guy sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by incense, notebooks, and a very committed bong.

His laptop glowed in the low light.

He opened the email.

Two attachments:

• “Simplified Version”

• “Full Theory (Expanded Language)”

He hovered for a second.

Then clicked the long one.

Scrolled.

Nodded slowly.

“…Yeah.”

More scrolling.

“…That’s it.”

Satisfied, he leaned back slightly, absorbing his own thoughts as if they’d just been validated by the universe itself.

His eyes drifted to the second attachment.

“Oh cool,” he muttered. “They sent me a thesis statement.”

He opened it.

Read out loud:

He paused.

Sat with it.

Then slowly walked to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.

In the reflection—

A panda stared back at him.

He nodded, completely serious.

“…Yeah. That tracks.”

“This story is 100% true. Except for the panda. And the cigarettes. And the 800 pages. Okay, fine — it’s fiction. But the part where I used to write like a confused philosopher? That’s me. Now I help others say what they mean — clearly. Ghostwrite Rory, signing off.”

Act One — “Redundancy Check”

The office was quiet in the way a place gets when nothing important is happening but everyone insists on staying anyway.

Except for the typing.

Click.
Clack.
Click-click.
Clack.

Fast. Relentless. Slightly aggressive.

Inkwell sat hunched over his keyboard, little ghost flippers hammering away like he was racing something no one else could see. The sound echoed through the main office, sharp enough to feel intentional.

From down the hall, a head slowly appeared in the doorway.

The Saurus.

He stood there for a moment, listening. Not concerned. Just… tired of it.

“Inkwell,” he said, “the sound of your typing is extra repetitive today.”

The typing didn’t stop.

“Sorry ’bout that,” Inkwell said, eyes locked on the screen. “Just trying to finish something.”

The Saurus leaned against the frame, arms crossed.

“Define something.”

“My sitcom.”

That got a pause.

The typing slowed. Not much. Just enough to acknowledge the weight of what had been said.

The Saurus blinked once.

“Your sitcom.”

“Yeah.”

“On company time.”

“Yeah.”

“With your work computer.”

Inkwell finally stopped typing and looked over, like this part confused him.

“Yea.”

The Saurus stared at him for a beat. Then another. Processing. Reprocessing.

“Well,” he said, pushing off the doorway, “let me know if you want a redundancy check.”

Inkwell turned back to the screen.

“Sure,” he said. “Why not?”

That was all the invitation The Saurus needed.

He crossed the room, hopped into Inkwell’s chair like he owned it, and pulled the keyboard closer. The document filled the screen. Page after page. Dense. Dialogue-heavy. Slightly bloated in that way writers pretend is intentional.

The Saurus squinted.

“…Wow.”

His claws hovered over the keys.

“That’s about as redundant as a mass extinction,” he muttered.

And then he started.

Delete.
Delete-delete.
Scroll.
Cut.
Replace.
Trim.

The rhythm was different from Inkwell’s typing. Less frantic. More precise. Like each keystroke had somewhere to be.

Lines disappeared.
Paragraphs collapsed.
Entire exchanges reduced to something sharper, cleaner, more dangerous.

Inkwell watched over his shoulder, expression slowly shifting from confidence… to curiosity… to quiet concern.

“Hey—” he started.

“Hold on.”

Delete.

“—I think that part—”

Cut.

“—that was setting up—”

Gone.

The Saurus didn’t look up.

He worked like he’d done this a thousand times. Because he had.

A few minutes later, he leaned back, satisfied.

“Redundancy check done!” he said, hopping out of the chair.

Inkwell blinked.

“That was fast.”

“Efficiency.”

Inkwell turned back to the screen.

Scrolled.

Stopped.

Scrolled back up.

His script—twenty-eight pages of carefully constructed dialogue, timing, and setup—now sat at twelve.

Twelve.

He stared at it.

Silence settled into the room, heavier than before.

Inkwell let out a long, slow sigh.

“…You ate my script.”

The Saurus shrugged.

“You’re welcome.”

The cursor blinked on the screen.

Patient. Unbothered.

Waiting for something better.

Act Two — “The B-Plot”

Inkwell sat at his desk, staring at the screen like it had personally wronged him.

Twelve pages.

Twelve.

He leaned back, drifting slightly in the air as the weight of it settled in.

Who would’ve thought a sitcom would be this hard to write?

The cursor blinked.

Mocking him.

From across the office, a familiar figure floated past, casual, unbothered, like he existed on a slightly more efficient timeline than everyone else.

“Glyph!” Inkwell called.

Glyph stopped mid-glide and turned, adjusting his glasses slightly as he drifted over.

“What is it, Inkwell?”

Inkwell gestured weakly at the screen.

“I’m trying to write a sitcom. Had a full script.”

He paused.

“The Saurus ate most of it.”

Glyph tilted his head.

“Had he not had breakfast yet?”

Inkwell stared at him.

“Glyph.”

“Right. Workflow problem.”

Glyph floated closer and looked over the document. His expression didn’t change much, which somehow made it worse.

He scrolled.

Paused.

Scrolled again.

“You need a B-plot.”

Inkwell blinked.

“A what?”

“A B-plot,” Glyph said, like this was obvious. “Secondary storyline. It runs underneath your main plot. Adds structure. Contrast. Movement.”

Inkwell stared at his twelve lonely pages.

“I don’t even have enough plot for an A-plot anymore.”

“That’s because you lost half your scaffolding,” Glyph said calmly. “The B-plot will give it back.”

Inkwell hesitated.

“…My submission is due tonight.”

Glyph nodded once.

“Then we don’t overthink it.”

He reached over, pulling up a blank section beneath the script.

“Step one: we build the B-plot.”

His fingers moved with quiet efficiency. Not frantic like Inkwell. Not surgical like The Saurus. Just… deliberate.

A second storyline started to take shape.

Different tone. Different rhythm. Still connected.

“Step two,” Glyph continued, “we integrate it.”

Inkwell leaned in slightly.

“How?”

Glyph didn’t look up.

“We let AI do the stitching.”

Inkwell froze.

“…We what?”

“It’s faster,” Glyph said. “We feed both plots in. Let it weave them together.”

A few keystrokes.

A brief pause.

Then—

“There we go.”

The document refreshed.

Full again.

Pages restored. Scenes connected. Structure… present.

Inkwell’s eyes widened.

“…You did it.”

He scrolled.

Then slowed.

Then stopped.

Something felt off.

He read a line.

Then another.

The rhythm was wrong.

Too clean. Too balanced. Too… polite.

“…Glyph.”

Glyph was already drifting back.

“Yeah?”

Inkwell looked up, unsettled.

“Everything sounds robotic.”

He turned the screen slightly.

“Even the jokes aren’t funny anymore.”

Glyph paused mid-air, considering that for about half a second.

“…Yeah, that tracks.”

Inkwell stared at him.

“That tracks?”

“You outsourced the voice,” Glyph said simply.

Inkwell looked back at the script.

It was technically correct.

Structurally sound.

Completely lifeless.

“…So what do I do?”

Glyph started drifting away again, already done with the problem.

“Ask BooRadley.”

“Glpyh!—”

But he was already gone.

Leaving Inkwell alone with a script that worked…

…and didn’t.

The cursor blinked.

Again.

Still waiting.

Act Three — “Decontamination”

Inkwell stared at the screen.

Technically correct.

Emotionally vacant.

A sitcom that read like it had been written by someone who had studied humor… but never laughed.

He didn’t move for a moment.

Then—

He reached for his phone.

“Hey BooRadley,” he said, staring at the blinking cursor. “When are you gonna be back from that decontamination job?”

“Right now.”

Inkwell froze.

Slowly turned.

BooRadley stood directly behind him.

Calm. Unbothered. Like he’d been there the whole time and just didn’t feel like announcing it.

Inkwell blinked.

“…Okay.”

He gestured to the screen.

“First, The Saurus ate half my script.”

BooRadley nodded.

“Efficient.”

“Then Glyph made what was left a cyborg.”

BooRadley leaned slightly to the side, looking at the monitor.

“…Yeah. I can see that.”

Inkwell slumped a little.

“I don’t even know what I’m looking at anymore.”

BooRadley stepped forward.

“Let’s take a look.”

He pulled the chair in, eyes scanning the document. Not rushing. Not reacting. Just… reading.

A beat passed.

Then another.

“Hm.”

He reached for the keyboard.

“Stand back.”

Inkwell didn’t argue.

He floated a few feet behind him, watching like someone observing surgery they didn’t fully understand.

BooRadley cracked his specter knuckles once.

Then started.

“Let’s start with the dialogue,” he said.

Click.

Delete.

Replace.

“Here we go. Just needs a little punch.”

A line shifted.

Not longer.

Just… sharper.

He moved to the next.

“…What is this actually trying to say?”

A pause.

Then—

“Of course.”

Rewrite.

The rhythm changed immediately.

Less perfect. More human.

He kept going.

Trimming where things were over-explained.

Breaking lines where they were too clean.

Letting characters almost say things instead of spelling them out.

“Don’t need that.”

Delete.

“Too neat.”

Break.

“Say less.”

Cut.

Paste.

Coffee.

The script didn’t grow.

It tightened.

What stayed mattered more.

What changed felt… alive.

Inkwell leaned in slightly, watching the same scenes he’d written start to sound like something people might actually say.

A joke landed.

He blinked.

“…Wait.”

Another line.

It hit better.

Not bigger.

Just real.

BooRadley leaned back.

“There we go.”

He tapped the screen lightly.

“Brought it back to humanity for you.”

Inkwell drifted forward, cautious, like the document might revert if he moved too fast.

He scrolled.

A slow smile crept in.

He looked over at BooRadley.

For a second, it seemed like he might say something more.

Inkwell turned back to the screen.

It didn’t feel like it was waiting.

It felt like it was ready.

Final Act — “Close Enough”

Rory’s office carried the kind of calm that only comes from controlled chaos.

A cigarette burned slowly in the ashtray.

Rory was already smoking another.

Coffee. Black. Steaming in front of him.

Across from him—

Glyph hovered, idly polishing his magnifying glass.

The Saurus leaned back in a chair that probably wasn’t built for him.

BooRadley stood off to the side, arms folded, quietly observing everything.

Glyph glanced toward the door.

“I hope Inkwell doesn’t get pushed around at his pitch meeting.”

The Saurus shrugged.

“Yeah. He’s not the strongest negotiator.”

Rory exhaled smoke, unimpressed.

“No kiddin’. He’s still an intern.”

BooRadley glanced over.

“Rory… he’s been here eight years.”

Rory nodded.

“Yeah. No kiddin’.”

The door burst open.

Inkwell floated in, practically vibrating.

“I SOLD IT.”

Everyone turned.

“I sold the show!” he said, beaming. “They loved it. They said it was fresh, original—”

He paused for effect.

“I’m the Super Creative Producer.”

Silence.

Rory stared at him.

“…That’s not a real title.”

Inkwell blinked.

“It’s on the paperwork.”

“They stole your show, kid.” Rory said flatly.

Inkwell hesitated.

“…Well… I’m just happy to be in the credits.”

The Saurus leaned forward.

“Did they pay you anything?”

Inkwell brightened.

“Yeah! They gave me a five hundred dollar gift card to Christian’s Chicken.”

A pause.

“…It expires tomorrow.”

The Saurus stood immediately.

“So we’re going out for chicken.”

Glyph perked up.

“Now that’s a structured plan.”

BooRadley gave a small nod.

Rory stubbed out his cigarette.

“Finally. A deal that makes sense.”

The office erupted.

Chairs scraped. Papers scattered. Momentum.

They all headed for the door.

Inkwell lingered just a second longer, glancing back at the empty office—

Then followed.

No one expected the show to last. But somehow…

Six Months Later

The GhostWrite staff grouped together in Rory’s office.

The smell of smoke and coffee a permanent fixture in the air.

A TV flickered in the corner.

Everyone was gathered around.

Watching.

The show.

He paused, and skipped back.

Glyph floated forward, raising his magnifying glass.

Tracking.

Zooming in on the smallest line at the bottom of the screen.

He squinted.

“…Found it.”

The room leaned in.

Tiny text.

Barely visible.

Rory didn’t look away from the screen.

“…That says ‘Ink Wells.’”

Inkwell tilted his head.

Squinted.

Considered it.

“…Well.”

A small shrug.

If you’ve ever felt burdened by pesky concepts like honesty, closure, or empathy, this guide is for you.
Follow these twelve scientifically unverified, emotionally convenient steps, and you’ll never again confuse self-improvement with accountability.

Rule 1: Stand Up Straight; So No One Can See the Mess Behind You

Posture communicates power.
When confronted about your behavior, square your shoulders, furrow your brow, and say something vaguely stoic like, “I’m just protecting my peace.”
The rigid spine signals integrity, distracting everyone from the flexibility of your morals.

If questioned further, pivot to the word energy.
Energy is the Swiss Army knife of explanations, it means everything and nothing.
You didn’t forget their birthday; their energy shifted.

It seems like every coach or guru has their own list of what spirituality is or isn’t. The truth is that spirituality is the same as perspective; it’s unique to the individual.

The stage I commonly refer to as ego glitter is the final trap that, unfortunately, far too many people fall into. Ego glitter, in plain terms, is what happens when someone achieves a taste of awakening and believes they now see the entire picture.

The real truth behind awakening is that enlightenment is earned in layers.

Synchronic Self Theory (SST) respects that process, because it understands that knowing is not a destination — it’s a practice. Every layer you uncover expands your field of awareness, but each layer also proves how little you knew before.

It’s best to hold all knowledge as temporary. Every truth is a bridge to a better one. The moment you stop crossing bridges, you stop growing.

How to Catch Ego Glitter in Real Time

There are ways to keep ego glitter in check, but all of them come down to self-honesty.

1. Test the border between possible and impossible.
Much of what we call “impossible” is simply implausible from our current understanding. Challenge those assumptions. This dismantles the self-limiting beliefs the ego hides behind.

2. Ask yourself regularly, “Is that true?”
When you start questioning the truth behind what you say and believe, you begin to notice how many rules and definitions you inherited rather than discovered. Many of the beliefs you call “truth” were installed by other people who never questioned them either.

3. When you begin to feel chosen, interpret it differently.
This is the big one. Feeling chosen is not a sign of superiority. It’s an invitation to responsibility. The universe isn’t picking you to save humanity; it’s pushing you to refine your craft. Feeling chosen means you are ready to participate more fully — not to play messiah.

What Spirituality Isn’t

Spirituality isn’t complicated. It isn’t a list of rules that need to be followed.

One person can say incense is necessary for sacred smoke. Another can say incense isn’t real spirituality.
SST says what makes the smoke sacred is the symbol and the intention behind it.

If someone doesn’t want to use smoke, oils, or tools, they don’t need to.
The sacred isn’t in the object; it’s in the relationship between consciousness and symbol.

SST encourages the individual to find their own symbolic vocabulary. If a crystal grounds you, use it. If stillness grounds you, use that.
For another to say your spirituality is wrong is, ironically, the only thing that actually is.

So to clarify: spirituality isn’t judging how others practice spirituality, and it isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Spirituality isn’t a checklist. It’s not about incense, crystals, or specific practices. It’s about your own truth—what works for you, not what others say is ‘right.’

Why People Blur the Line

Here’s the psychology behind why people blur the line.

When someone is stuck in a state of ego glitter, their unconscious patterns have been remapped, but the ego hasn’t caught up yet. The conscious and unconscious are out of sync. The ego, still dazzled by the discovery of depth, confuses insight for arrival.

The ego takes comfort in identity; even a spiritual one. But identity is just another costume. The moment the ego begins to build a personality around awakening (“I’m an empath,” “I’m a starseed,” “I’m a healer”), it quietly replaces growth with performance.

This is why “spiritual influencers” tend to sound more certain than wise. Certainty sells. Certainty protects the ego from the discomfort of change.

When someone goes through awakening starting from atheism, it can be violent. Their worldview collapses overnight. Anything that smells like “woo” becomes suspect, because the intellect still needs proof.

Someone who starts from a mystical framework experiences the opposite; they interpret everything through the lens of “energy” or “the universe” because that’s the language their unconscious already speaks.

Neither path is wrong. They are simply mirrors of each other.
But both can fall into the same trap: mistaking their perspective for truth.

The Difference Between Depth and Display

There’s a difference between being spiritual and performing spirituality.

Performative spirituality is designed for validation; it’s curated, aesthetic, algorithm-friendly. It trades inner development for outer symbolism.
It’s the influencer selling crystals they don’t meditate with, or the coach repackaging Jung and quantum physics into Instagram carousels.

SST calls this the “ego glitter economy.”
It thrives on being seen, not being changed.

But real spirituality doesn’t glitter. It grows quietly, usually in private, and it tends to look a lot like emotional maturity.
It’s the person who can sit in silence without checking their phone.
It’s the person who forgives without needing to announce it.
It’s the person who listens more than they lecture.

Spirituality isn’t a costume you wear; it’s the way you walk when no one’s looking.

The simplest way to stay free of ego glitter is to build humility into your practice.

Humility isn’t self-deprecation. It’s clarity about scope.

At its heart, spirituality is self-honesty.
It’s the willingness to look at the parts of yourself you don’t want to see; and to keep looking even after you do.

SST treats spirituality as the art of synchronization:
bringing the ego and the unconscious into partnership so that your external life reflects your internal truth.
When the two halves cooperate, the sacred stops being something you chase.

But nobody ever defines what alignment actually is.

It’s the point where the conscious and the unconscious stop arguing about reality and start running the same program.

That state is alignment.

Once you chart them, you can see the storm system instead of getting caught in the rain.

The statement is the ego’s data point.
The emotion beneath it is the unconscious signal.

Step 2: Translate the Pattern into Symbol

Close your eyes and ask your imagination to show you the pattern as an image.
You might see a locked door, a tired animal, a dark ocean.
Whatever arises is the symbol the unconscious is already using to store that pattern.

Describe it in writing as if you were cataloguing a species.
Notice colors, shapes, moods.
That description is the bridge between both halves of your psyche.

Step 3: Engage the Unconscious

Use active imagination or dreaming to expand the scene.
If it’s a locked door, imagine turning the handle.
If it’s a tired animal, talk to it.
If it’s a dark ocean, dive in.
The unconscious will begin to reveal the emotional memory or unprocessed belief underneath.

Step 4: Perform Symbolic Closure

Once you’ve reached understanding, perform a small action to represent resolution.
It might be writing a letter and burning it, moving an object from one place to another, drawing the symbol and marking it complete.
The action is the ego’s evidence.
It sees the ritual, feels the closure, and stops guarding the pattern.

Step 5: Observe Synchronic Feedback

Within days or weeks, external events often echo the internal change; subtle synchronicities, new opportunities, a conversation that confirms your insight.
They’re not “signs from the universe.”
They’re your perception realigning to the new pattern.
Reality hasn’t changed; you have, and now you notice coherence where there was conflict.

Step 6: Re-map Identity

Once the loop resolves, take time to redefine who you are without that pattern.
The ego needs a new job description.
Write a short paragraph that starts, “Now that this pattern is complete, I….”
That statement anchors the new alignment.

IX. Signs of Alignment

Alignment isn’t mystical; it’s observable.
When the ego and unconscious finally agree, several things happen:

• Reduced internal contradiction. You stop arguing with yourself. Decisions feel obvious instead of exhausting.

• Stable emotion. You still feel anger or fear, but it moves through you without distortion.

• Effortless timing. You begin to act at the right moment without overthinking.

• Clean intuition. Insights arrive like finished sentences, not cryptic riddles.

• Gentle synchronicity. Life mirrors your intent in small, affirming ways; song lyrics, numbers, conversations that confirm progress.

This is the working definition of peace in SST: not silence, but coherence.

X. The Ego’s Cooperation

Traditional spirituality treats the ego like an obstacle to destroy.
SST sees it as a translator that simply needs retraining.
Without the ego, insights can’t become action.

The ego’s nature is to categorize, plan, and protect.
When you involve it, by giving it tangible proof of change through symbolic closure; it becomes an ally.
It stops resisting the unconscious and starts managing integration.

Think of it this way:
The unconscious writes the new script.
The ego produces the play.

When both trust each other, life becomes rehearsal and performance at once.

XI. Misuse and Re-Centering

Every system has its shadow.
SST warns against two common traps.

1. Performance Magic: treating symbolic action as literal power over reality.
   The moment you believe ritual causes the world to obey you, you’ve fallen back into ego inflation.
   Symbolic action is internal communication, not cosmic manipulation.

2. Escapist Mysticism: using pattern work to avoid responsibility.
   “It’s just my shadow” doesn’t excuse bad behavior.

Less fireworks, more clarity.

It’s the psychological version of muscle memory.

Ego death does not arrive as a revelation.
It arrives as a series of dissolutions that reshape the way you understand yourself. People imagine it as a sudden awakening, a single night of clarity where light breaks through the mind and everything becomes obvious. That is the mythology. The reality is slower. It unfolds in layers. The old self falls apart piece by piece, and each time you believe the process is complete, another layer rises to the surface.

Ego death is not the end of the self.
It is the end of the performance.

This is the actual process as it happens in the mind and the body. It begins in darkness, moves through illusion, and ends in sovereignty.

I. The Dark Nights: Where the Story Breaks Open

Every genuine transformation begins with a fracture.

The dark nights are the moments where your inherited identity becomes too small. Jung described this as the psyche colliding with its own unconscious content. The ego hates being exposed. Once the old identity begins to crack, the ego tries to save face by rebuilding itself with shiny parts. Jung noticed this inflation in people who gained a little insight and suddenly behaved as if they had achieved enlightenment. SST calls this the ego glitter stage.

Ego glitter is the phase where the ego puts on a costume made of symbolism, spirituality, and self importance. It clings to new beliefs and imagines they are profound breakthroughs. It does not want transformation. It wants attention.

Ego glitter says things like:
“I finally understand everything.”
“I must be chosen.”
“I have arrived.”

The reality is that you have barely stepped through the first doorway.

This stage is seductive because it shields you from the uncomfortable truth that growth requires humility. It is the ego’s last attempt to remain the protagonist of your story.

And it always fails.

III. Accepting the Endless Descent: The Humility to Continue

Eventually the glitter flakes off.
You begin to notice contradictions.
The questions return.

This is the moment where your transformation either deepens or collapses. Many people turn back here because they expected enlightenment to be a single revelation rather than a lifelong unfolding.

SST teaches that deeper questions are the fuel of expansion. Every time you peel away a layer, another emerges. The mind does not become clearer by finding final answers. It becomes clearer by refining its questions.

The ego’s final stand is the belief that it finally knows everything it needs to know.

The antidote is joy in the unknown.

You stop assuming.
You start testing.
You form hypotheses instead of conclusions.
You observe your mind instead of identifying with every thought.

This is where humility turns into strength.
This is where real transformation begins.

IV. Dropping Expectations: The Quiet Skill of Freedom

One of the most misunderstood steps of ego death comes next.

People confuse dropping expectations with lowering standards. They are not the same. Lowering standards is surrendering your value. Dropping expectations is surrendering your illusions.

Expectations insist the world should operate according to your narrative.
Standards define how you choose to operate within the world.

Marcus Aurelius wrote about this difference with perfect simplicity. The only thing you can control is yourself. SST acknowledges this truth, but adds an important nuance. You cannot control yourself until you know yourself.

Dropping expectations frees you from the trap of believing effort guarantees results.
You act because the action aligns with your values.
Not because you believe life owes you a reward.

This shift creates emotional space. The world becomes less threatening because you stop trying to force it to behave.

Expectations fall away.
Presence returns.

V. Understanding the Shadow: What You Refuse to See

Shadow work has been misrepresented so much that the word has lost its meaning. Many imagine the shadow as a reservoir of evil, or a place where all the things you hate about yourself hide. Jung never framed it that way.

The shadow is simply everything you have not integrated.
It includes your wounds, your fears, your suppressed desires, your repressed traits, and your unlived potential.

Jung described the shadow as a part of the psyche that must be faced if you want to become whole. SST builds on this by explaining that the shadow also contains the habits you use when your identity feels threatened. This includes defensiveness, projection, avoidance, harsh self criticism, and patterns you inherited from others that you never questioned.

Shadow work is not a punishment.
It is recognition.

You admit you are capable of the behaviors you judge in others.
You face your reactions without shame.
You reclaim the disowned parts of yourself.

The shadow stops being a threat once you stop running from it.

VI. Psychological Freedom: The World Stops Being About You

Once the shadow begins to integrate, something remarkable shifts.

You stop personalizing the behavior of others.
You see people acting from their wounds, their conditioning, or their fears. Their reactions become reflections of their own inner landscape, not a verdict on your value.

SST calls this psychological freedom.

Psychological freedom is the moment you detach your self worth from the emotional weather of other people. You stop trying to fix them. You stop trying to read their minds. You stop designing your identity around their approval.

Boundaries become expressions of clarity instead of weapons or apologies.

This freedom does not make you indifferent.
It makes you sovereign.

VII. Anima, Animus, and the Path of Individuation

Jung described the psyche as containing two inner figures.
The anima represents the inner feminine within men.
The animus represents the inner masculine within women.

Individuation occurs when these inner opposites become integrated instead of polarized.

SST honors Jung’s structure but reframes it through a mythic lens.
In SST:

Anamnesis represents the awakened anima, the inner remembrance, the intuitive knowing, and the clarity that comes from turning inward.

Logos represents the awakened animus, the discerning mind, the pattern maker, and the clarity that comes from turning outward.

Integration requires both.
SST teaches that clarity comes when these two currents of the psyche recognize each other rather than compete. The result is a state where thought and intuition work in harmony.

The identity you inherited dissolves.
A conscious self emerges.

This is individuation in Jung’s terms.
This is remembrance in SST’s terms.

VIII. Identity: The Final Prison That Must Be Opened

Identity feels stable, which is why people cling to it.
But identity is the final self limiting belief.

Jung saw identity as a mask, a persona required for social life. The problem begins when someone believes the mask is their actual self. SST goes further and explains that identity is the last layer of ego attachment. It is the set of labels you cling to when you fear change.

Gender, job titles, insecurities, social roles, relationships, and even belief systems can become cages.

Nonbinary identity and gender fluidity are not simply descriptors of gender experience. They reveal something deeper. The psyche is not static. It shifts. It contains multitudes. Identity is not a container. It is a conversation.

When you shed the labels you were taught to cling to, you rediscover lost parts of yourself.
You try new things without fear of looking ridiculous.
You explore paths you previously denied yourself.
You realize that career changes are possible.
You remember that creativity lives under the layers of identity you abandoned years ago.

The less tightly you cling to identity, the more fully you live.

You stop living for the world and start living from your own interior truth.

IX. SST’s Current Endpoint: Psychological Sovereignty

Jung’s endpoint was individuation, the integration of the unconscious into conscious life.

SST’s current endpoint is psychological sovereignty.

Psychological sovereignty means:

You understand your patterns.
You question your impulses.
You choose your story instead of reenacting the one you inherited.
You do not outsource your identity to others.
You do not perform for validation.
You see yourself with honesty instead of judgment.
You respond to life instead of reacting to it.

Sovereignty is not isolation.
It is clarity.
It is the quiet authority that comes from knowing who you are without needing anyone else to confirm it.

Ego death is not the destruction of the self.
It is the freeing of the self.

It is the end of the mask, the end of inherited identity, and the beginning of a life led by awareness rather than fear.

X. The Madrone Tree: A Living Teacher of Ego Death

There is a tree in the Pacific Northwest that understands ego death better than most people ever will.
The madrone does not cling to its identity.
It does not hoard its bark.
It does not pretend that its outer layer is who it truly is.

The madrone sheds.

Its bark peels off in thin, curled ribbons, revealing an entirely new surface beneath. At first the exposed trunk is smooth, bright, vulnerable, the color of fresh clay or warm copper. Over time it toughens, darkens, and becomes the new outer layer. And when that layer becomes old and rigid, the madrone sheds again.

The tree is never finished.
It is always becoming.

This is why the madrone is important within Synchronic Self Theory. SST teaches that ego death happens in layers, and the madrone demonstrates this truth in the physical world. The tree does not tear away healthy bark. It releases only what is ready to fall. Human transformation works the same way.

The old stories crack.
The outdated identities loosen.
The beliefs that no longer fit begin to split open.
And when they are ready, they fall away.

People often assume ego death requires force. But the madrone reveals the opposite. Shedding is not violence. Shedding is readiness. The bark lets go when the layer beneath is strong enough to hold the light.

Every time the madrone reveals a new layer, it glows.
This is not vanity.
This is renewal.

In SST, the madrone represents the natural rhythm of psychological transformation. It shows that there is no final self, only the next self. The shedding never stops, and that is not a flaw in the system. That is the system.

The madrone teaches:
You are allowed to change.
You are allowed to grow out of your skin.
You are allowed to reveal the parts of yourself that were hidden beneath old protection.
You are allowed to become someone new without betraying who you were.

And perhaps the most important lesson:

What falls away is not wasted.
It is simply no longer needed.

The bark becomes soil.
The soil becomes nourishment.
The nourishment becomes strength for the next layer.

Ego death is not destruction.
It is recycling.

The madrone understands this.
The psyche understands this.
And SST recognizes the tree as a living metaphor for the endless, gentle shedding required to reach psychological sovereignty.

You do not have to force yourself open.
You only have to stop clinging to the bark that is already trying to leave.

XI. The Sequoia: The Living Fossil and the Teacher of Remembrance

Some trees do not simply grow.
Some trees remember.

The sequoia is one of them.
Older than empires, older than myths, older than most of what we call human history, the sequoia stands as a living fossil. It is a guardian of deep time. A witness to ages that have vanished. A body grown out of continuity rather than momentary survival.

Where the madrone teaches the art of shedding, the sequoia teaches the art of remembering.

Sequoias do not rush.
They do not perform.
They do not cling to the urgency that defines human life.
Their growth is not hurried, but inevitable.

A sequoia does not fight to be tall.
It becomes tall by remembering what it already is.

This is why the sequoia belongs inside Synchronic Self Theory. SST teaches that Anamnesis is the recollection of the self beneath the layers of fear, identity, and inherited narrative. The sequoia embodies this principle in the physical world. It is a being that has preserved its lineage through fire, drought, and centuries of quiet observation.

The sequoia carries its past in its rings, but it is not weighed down by it.
It grows upward while holding every year inside its body.
This is remembrance without burden.
Memory without stagnation.

People often think remembering means revisiting pain, reliving wounds, or carrying the weight of every mistake. But the sequoia shows a different kind of memory. It remembers through expansion. It integrates every year into strength. Its past becomes structure, not suffering.

The sequoia teaches:

You are allowed to grow slowly.
You are allowed to take your time.
You are allowed to hold your history without becoming trapped in it.
You are allowed to remember who you were before fear taught you to be small.

This is the heart of Anamnesis.

Remembrance is not nostalgia.
Remembrance is the return to truth.
It is the return to the self that existed before identity was imposed.
It is the recognition that your psyche is older than your wounds.

Sequoias regenerate after fire because their cones only open in heat.
Transformation through intensity.
Rebirth through trial.

Their survival is not accidental.
It is a design based on endurance.

SST teaches this same principle:
The pressures that break the surface ego awaken the deeper self underneath.
The fires you survive unlock the seeds of who you were always becoming.

In this way, the sequoia is not just a tree.
It is a mirror of the soul’s long memory.

The madrone teaches release.
The oak teaches descent.
But the sequoia teaches continuity.
The sense of self that does not shatter when identity falls apart.
The truth that remains when illusion burns.

A living fossil.
A living pillar of Anamnesis.
A reminder that growth is not a race.
It is an ancient inheritance.

The sequoia stands not because it learned to become tall,
but because it never forgot how.

XII. The Ginkgo: The Other Living Fossil and the Teacher of Logos

If the sequoia is the living memory of the earth,
then the ginkgo is its living mind.

The ginkgo is one of the oldest tree species on the planet, unchanged for more than two hundred million years. It survived mass extinctions, shifting continents, collapsing ecosystems, and the rise and fall of civilizations. It outlived the dinosaurs. It outlived every empire. It outlived every story humanity has ever told.

Yet the ginkgo remains simple.
Direct.
Precise.
Clear.

This clarity makes it the perfect representation of Logos within Synchronic Self Theory.

Where the sequoia embodies Anamnesis, the remembering soul,
the ginkgo embodies Logos, the discerning mind.

Its leaves are unmistakable.
Fan shaped. Symmetrical. Perfect.
A symbol that looks almost designed rather than grown.

The ginkgo does not waste energy.
Its logic is efficiency.
Its beauty is structure.
Its survival is intentional, not accidental.

In SST, Logos is not cold intellect.
It is the part of the psyche that sees the pattern beneath chaos.
It is the awakened animus:
the clarity that cuts through illusion
the structure that stabilizes transformation
the discernment that protects sovereignty.

The ginkgo teaches these qualities by its very existence.

Its seasonal rhythm is exact.
It turns gold not gradually, but all at once.
A sudden shift.
A clean transformation.
An event, not a process.

And when its leaves fall, they do not scatter like other trees.
They descend together in a single, unified drop —
a moment of perfect synchronicity.

The ginkgo does not hesitate.
It does not overthink.
It does not cling to what is ready to be released.

This is Logos.
The clean cut.
The decision made in alignment rather than fear.
The understanding that clarity is not cruelty.
It is mercy.

The ginkgo also teaches neutrality.
Its lineage has survived because it avoids extremes.
It grows in fire.
It grows in smog.
It grows in volcanic ash.
It grows in cities that forgot what silence sounds like.

It does not demand ideal conditions.
It adapts without losing itself.

Logos functions the same way.
It holds form under pressure.
It adapts without surrender.
It builds boundaries without building walls.

The ginkgo teaches that rationality is not the opposite of intuition.
It is the spine that supports it.

And unlike many symbols of intellect,
the ginkgo’s logic is not cold.
Its golden leaves illuminate entire streets.
Its presence feels ancient and gentle.
Its clarity feels warm rather than sharp.

This is the awakened animus.
Not the rigid ego masquerading as reason,
but the true inner Logos that seeks accuracy, not dominance.

The ginkgo stands as the other living fossil for SST because it embodies the mind that remains when illusions fall away.
It is the message of clarity across deep time.

The sequoia teaches what it means to remember.
The ginkgo teaches what it means to understand.

Together, they hold the twin pillars of Synchronic Self Theory:
Anamnesis and Logos,
remembrance and clarity,
the soul and the mind awakening in balance.

A tree for memory.
A tree for reason.
A tree for the self that knows where it came from.
A tree for the self that knows where it stands.

The ginkgo remains not because it is ancient,
but because its clarity was true from the beginning.

XIII. The Sovereign Subalpine Larch

Some trees rule by height.
Some by strength.
Some by age.
But the subalpine larch rules by paradox.

It is the only conifer in North America that chooses to shed its needles.
It is evergreen in lineage, deciduous in behavior, ancient in ancestry, and adaptive in spirit.
It grows at the roof of the world, rooted into stone where other trees refuse to live.
Its winters are brutal.
Its summers are brief.
Its soil is thin.
Its storms are merciless.
Yet the larch not only survives these conditions.
It thrives in them.

This is sovereignty.

Not the sovereignty imagined by ego; the rigidity, the resistance, the refusal to bend.
The larch shows a different model.
Sovereignty is flexibility without losing form.
It is transformation without losing essence.
It is shedding without fear of emptiness.
It is rising without isolating.
It is standing alone without being lonely.

The subalpine larch turns gold in autumn.
A crown of its own making.
A quiet coronation against the coming snow.
It is not the gold of ego glitter, which sparkles to be seen.
It is the gold of earned wisdom, of years spent enduring wind and stone.

In Synchronic Self Theory, sovereignty is the endpoint for now.
It is the moment where the psyche no longer negotiates with its wounds, its projections, or its inherited stories.
It is the point at which intention replaces reactivity, clarity replaces fear, and self-definition becomes an internal act rather than a social performance.

The larch reflects each of these truths.

It sheds identity on purpose.
Its needles fall cleanly.
No clinging.
No desperate grasping.
It knows that what is released will return.
Sovereignty is the same; letting go because the self beneath is strong enough to grow again.

It roots into stone.
Not seeking perfect conditions, but creating stability from whatever exists.
Sovereignty does not wait for ideal circumstances.
It adapts.
It stands.

It survives weight by bending.
Snow does not break the larch.
Its branches flex, yield, redistribute the pressure.
Strength in humility.
Power in motion.
The sovereign is not the one who resists the storm, but the one who moves with it.

It grows at the edge of the world.
High elevation.
Thin air.
Cold nights.
Long winters.
The liminal boundary between survival and impossible endurance.
These are not the conditions of ego.
These are the conditions of the awakened self.

The larch’s golden transformation is not decoration.
It is the signal of a consciousness that has moved beyond identity and settled into truth.
The gold appears when the tree is preparing to rest, conserve, and regenerate.
It is sovereignty expressed as rhythm rather than dominance.

No other tree embodies this balance:

• evergreen lineage
• deciduous shedding
• golden transmutation
• flexible strength
• liminal existence
• ancient endurance
• solitary majesty

The larch is sovereignty not because it commands the forest,
but because it commands itself.

In SST terms:

The madrone sheds the ego.
The oak teaches the descent.
The sequoia remembers.
The ginkgo understands.
But the larch becomes.

And becoming is sovereignty.

The larch stands where the world thins and the wind sharpens,
glowing like a living crown.
Not above the forest, but beyond it.
Not to dominate, but to endure.
Not to impress, but to exist in its fullest form.

It is the sovereign tree because it is the one that knows:
Sovereignty is not achieved.
It is remembered.
It is practiced.
It is lived.

And like the larch, it turns gold only when the soul is ready.

This piece is the most complete expression of my current understanding of transformation, ego death, and psychological sovereignty.
I wrote it as a map, not a doctrine.
A mirror, not a manual.

Each tree in this essay is a teacher taken directly from the natural world.
None of them are metaphors borrowed from books.
They are living beings I have stood with, walked past, learned from, and listened to.

The madrone taught me what shedding actually feels like.

The evergreen taught me the danger of glitter.
The maple tree growing from a stump taught me to release expectations.
